Flash Forward

Comic. Panel 1: The cat Mr. Smiggs sits on a sofa looking to the left. He says "We will imagine and nuture a better world during the Great Turning." Panel 2: Mr. Smiggs turns right and says "But one person's 'fix' is another person's 'break.'" Panel 3, next July: Alma is gardening near her sidewalk. A person we see from the waist down with a big watch says "I worried when you ripped up your lawn, but I like the flowers and butterflies." Panel 4: Alma looks up, takes off her sunglasses, and says "Uh, thanks?" The person says "Can you give me some tips for my yard?" Alma smiles and says "Happy to!" Panel 5 is wide and dark, a view of of Alma's backyard in the moonlight. You can see fireflies sparkling in front of the trees. Two people are sitting on the back porch. One says, "From rot to fireflies." The other says, "And back again."

I’ll be speaking about Our Turning at the Global Environmental Health LAB’s 8^th International Symposium for Sustainable Development tomorrow, November 14, 2025 at 9:15 pm Eastern time. After that, my sister cartoonist Maja Milkowska-Shibata from the Sequential Artists Workshop will speak on “Comics for Global Goals: Visual Storytelling as a Tool for Awareness and Change.” Hope to see you there!
